A Spiritual Communion is a prayer of faith to God for all the benefits of the Blessed Sacrament when it cannot be received because of what the 1662 Prayer Book called 'a just impediment', such as the current time when services are suspended. You can do a Spiritual Communion in one of two ways. If you have watched an online service, you can do the shorter 'Prayer for Spiritual Communion' below. If you have not watched an online service, you should follow a longer form for Spiritual Communion given below from either St Paul's Church or that of the Order of Julian of Norwich.
What is Spiritual Communion? Below is an interview on Spiritual Communion that Fr Chris Wood from Church of the Redeemer in Sarasota, FL, did with Fr Olver and myself. It offers an explanation of the theology and practice of Spiritual Communion historically. Fr Chris Wood is a former student of mine from Nashotah House, who serves as a priest at Church of the Redeemer.
